Our society still held prejudices against tattoos and, while some people were getting them on their own, no one would say tattoos were a part of pop culture.

Americans in the 18-25 age bracket, are not afraid to express themselves through their appearance and tattoos are the most popular form of self-expression — more than one-in-three (36%) now has one.That’s the proportion of young Americans (ages 18-25) of both sexes who have had themselves tatooed. About half in this age group have done at least one of the following: had a tatoo, dyed their hair an untraditional color or had their bodies pierced in a place other than their ear lobe. I began writing an article that was meant to be a guide on how to make tattooable silicone hands. Because I ended up spending a year trying to learn “how-to” make the bloody things, I realised it should be more than just an article.

So I curated a charity exhibition with over 30 globally renowned tattoo artists working on my silicone hands. We managed to raise of $2500 for Safesteps and WIRE, two Melbourne based organizations dedicated to providing support for women and children experiencing domestic violence. Now it has evolved into silicone heads and faces!
